Destination wedding versus boda tradicional

Are you considering a destination wedding? I’m going to tell you the different perspectives so you can choose between a destination wedding and a traditional wedding.

If you have always dreamed of getting married in your city, in the church where your parents got married and making your entrance as a couple in the same venue where your grandparents did, let me tell you that a destination wedding is not for you.

A destination wedding is for adventurous couples, who like to travel, who don’t mind guests falling off the list and who want an authentic experience to celebrate their love.

You have to put in a scale if you want a wedding of hundreds of guests within your city or if you prefer a small and intimate wedding in a destination miles away from your home.

It all depends on your preferences and tastes. There is no better or worse option.

YOUR WEDDING IN SPECTACULAR LOCATIONS

Sometimes, thinking about this type of wedding can create uncertainty about how to finance it.

But, if you want your wedding to be held in spectacular locations on this planet, you must know that:

  • Usually in this type of wedding the guests are the ones who have to pay for their own travel and accommodation, thus assuming part of the wedding expenses. As there are less guests, the main item in the bride and groom’s budget is considerably reduced: the banquet.

  • On the other hand, to balance out and try to reduce your guests’ expenses you can negotiate with hotels for some kind of discount for booking several rooms and even talk to airlines in case they have group rates. Think that maybe for your friends and family going to your wedding can be part of their vacation that year, so they will have travel + wedding, who gives more?

DESTINATION VS. LOCAL WEDDINGS: PROS AND CONS

As I was saying before, destination weddings are not for every couple, that’s for sure. So to finish deciding if this type of wedding is for you I’m going to tell you some of the pros and cons.

PROS

  • The experience is incredible

Travelling to your favourite country accompanied by your family and closest friends, celebrating an intimate wedding in a unique place and enjoying a unique party.

  • Less guests

Destination weddings are more intimate, because they have a smaller number of guests. Moving to another country or city and its corresponding accommodation means that only those people who really want to be there and are important to you will accompany you. Goodbye to commitment invitations.

  • They are more affordable

If you take into account that destination weddings are usually attended by only a few guests, the result can be no other than a smaller budget than a conventional and massive wedding.

  • Out of stress thanks to your wedding planner

Planning a wedding is stressful for a bride but leaving it in the hands of a professional you trust takes all the worries out of it. It’s the best decision.

  • Wedding and honeymoon

If you start your wedding trip in the same destination of the wedding you will have a 2×1, which will be reflected not only in your budget but in the whole experience of your wedding. Take advantage after the wedding to spend 3 or 4 days discovering a little more of the city or even enjoying your full honeymoon in the same country you are getting married.

  • A neutral place for international couples

When I told you the reasons for getting married in Andalusia I already said that if your families are from different countries or cities a destination wedding is the best option to have that neutral place to celebrate the wedding. This way none of the families will be able to be bothered by not having chosen their city.

CONS

  • Few guests

If you want a big wedding, a destination wedding is not for you. Not all idyllic destinations are prepared to accommodate hundreds of guests. The logistics can be an odyssey for large weddings.

  • Important people will be missing

Many guests will not be able to attend due to economic issues. As I said, part of the wedding expenses will be paid by the guests (travel + accommodation).

  • More formalities and paperwork

You need to do more arrangements than in the city where you live, and depending on the country you will need to do them in a specific time frame with many months in advance.

  • You won’t be able to organize it on your own

You need local professionals to help you. You can’t organize the wedding without help and from a distance. In addition, you will need to travel to the destination on several occasions in order to make the technical visits to the venues and meet the suppliers you cannot contact online.

  • Hurting feelings

Some family members may not understand the need for a foreign wedding and may be upset. If you want to please and look good for everybody, it is clear that this kind of wedding is not your wedding.

  • Communication in another language

They may not speak the same language as you at the destination. In addition to the need for more supervision and preparation than a traditional wedding, you will also need a person to act as an interpreter in order to communicate with all the suppliers.

If after the cons you’re down, don’t be disappointed. I will tell you that couples who decide to organize a destination wedding do it for two main reasons:

Romanticism to power.

The city where you met, the beach where you gave each other your first kiss, the country where you went on your first trip together…

It’s the only option.

They look for an intermediate destination if their home towns are both at one end of the world. Because they both work in that city even though they’re actually from another one. Or more often, they live abroad but want to get married in the city of their childhood, so they have no choice but to have a wedding from a distance.

AND YOU, WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO HOLD YOUR DESTINATION WEDDING?
